Lee Basement Window.jpegBasement windows are often overlooked and neglected, even when we replace all the windows in our home!  Keeping the bottom of our home insulated and sealed up is important for the overall energy efficiency of your entire home.

If you need to replace your old basement windows, there are a few things that you should first consider.  First of all, is your basement finished, or unfinished?  This will make a big difference in the type of window you choose.

Replacing Windows in an Unfinished Basement

If you have an unfinished basement, you may keep your washer or drying downstairs, or use the basement for storage, but if you are not spending time in the basement you wouldn’t need expensive decorative windows.  You also would not need the energy efficiency required of a lived-in room that you are constantly heating or cooling.

Replacing windows in an unfinished basement is easier than you may think.  If your window is set in concrete, you just need a reciprocating saw to cut through the frame and remove the old one.  Once you get the frame out, use a hammer and chisel to chip away any left over mortar or clumps left in the frame opening.  Then slide in your new window and center with shims, secure it by screwing it into the sill.  Apply caulk and expanding foam from the outside to give a tight insulating seal, and be sure to protect any wood with primer, paint or sealant.

Replacing Windows in a Finished Basement

If your basement is finished and used as a living room area, game room, or even an additional bedroom, there are additional factors to consider.  First of all, safety is of the utmost importance.  If your basement is used as a bedroom, be sure to know what your code requirements are as you may need an egress window for an escape route in case of fire.

Energy efficiency is more important for a finished basement living area, as you will be heating and cooling the room you’ll want adequate energy efficiency.  Installing energy efficient windows in a finished basement will ultimately save you money.  You may also want the décor to match your current living area.

Replacing your basement windows is less expensive and easier than you may realize, and will pay off in energy savings.
